David Phelps – President & Co-founder

David Phelps

David Phelps, M.B.A, founded Phelps Legal Consulting in 2009 with his father, J.R. Phelps. Their shared vision for PLC was to extend J.R.’s work with attorneys from the state of Florida to the entire country, helping attorneys to build more successful, rewarding practices based on sound business principles.

Prior to co-founding PLC, David spent 18 years as a top-producing sales & marketing executive, working for industry leading companies such as IBM, Client Profiles, and Pitney Bowes Legal Solutions.   In 2009, David was trained in attorney coaching by Atticus founders Mark Powers and Shawn McNalis and maintains his status an Affiliated Atticus Practice Advisor.

Having been taught by three titans of law practice management and attorney coaching, and by possessing more than 20 years of experience working with law firms of all sizes, David is uniquely qualified to help attorneys achieve their goals. He brings a diverse business background of corporate sales & marketing, legal technology expertise, practice management knowledge and considerable expertise in firm marketing.  In addition to coaching individual attorneys and firms on the "business" of law, David also serves as an out-of-house/in-house marketing director for a number of his clients.  David is a regular speaker on topics such as effective legal marketing strategies, time management for attorneys, legal technology and financial management.   A graduate of the University of Florida, David resides with his wife and twin sons in Atlanta, Georgia.

J.R. Phelps – Co-Founder (1943-2016)

J.R. Phelps

J. R. Phelps, known as the “Godfather of Practice Management”, co-founded Phelps Legal Consulting with his son, David Phelps, in 2009. Prior to his work with Phelps Legal Consulting he started and served as the director of The Florida Bar’s Law Office Management Assistance Service, from 1980 to his retirement from the Bar in 2009. LOMAS was created to provide start-up and management assistance to small law firms throughout Florida.  During his 29 year tenure as director of LOMAS, Mr. Phelps conducted almost 3,000 in-office consultations with law offices throughout Florida.  Since the founding of the Florida Bar's LOMAS program, over 30 state Bar Associations formed similar organizations modeled after LOMAS.  

J. R. was a Fellow of the American College of Law Practice Management. In 2006, he was awarded the Judge Walter S. Crumbley Award from the Practice Management and Development Section of The Florida Bar. In 2003, he was awarded Meritorious Recognition from the American Bar Association Standing Committee on the Delivery of Legal Services. He served as chair of various American Bar Association Law Practice Management Section committees, including serving as Liaison to the ABA Joint Committee on Lawyer Regulation. He also served on the Executive Council of the Law Practice Advisors Committee of the LPM Section, and as Vice Chair of the LPM Section Publishing Board.  J.R. served as Chairman of the Board of Florida Commerce Credit Union and also was an adjunct professor of at The Florida State University School of Law in Tallahassee, Florida.
